Rapid City and other jurisdictions have extra DUI patrols on the road

As the summer winds down, law enforcement agencies throughout South Dakota have been ramping up their efforts to find people driving under the influence. In Rapid City, DUI arrests are on a pace to exceed the large numbers recorded last year, according to KOTA Territory News. Holidays often bring out extra DUI patrols.

During any long weekend in the Black Hills, many out of state residents enjoy the scenery, Mount Rushmore and the many enjoyable establishments that serve local residents and tourists alike. Unfortunately, what was intended to be an enjoyable vacation, or long weekend for local residents, can turn into significant legal problems for many drivers who may have stayed out for one too many drinks.

Extra Patrols Are On The Road Through Labor Day

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration encourages state and local agencies across the country to participate in the national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign. While much of the campaign is aimed at awareness and safety tips to help people celebrating the holiday to use a taxi or designated driver to avoid DUI arrests, the campaign also encourages law enforcement to use sobriety checkpoints, saturation patrols and extra officers to investigate potential DUI allegations. Rapid City is roughly doubling the number of patrols dedicated to looking for drunk drivers through Labor Day.

It is important to note that a DUI arrest in South Dakota can adversely impact many aspects your life, whether you live in Spearfish, Rapid City or any city in the state, or you are just here for the long weekend. Your rights are also at stake.

Do Not Assume That There Is No Defense To A DUI Charge

It is important to understand that police can make mistakes; chemical tests can be flawed. If you are accused of DUI, you should consider speaking to an experienced DUI lawyer as soon as possible to learn what legal options may be available in your unique case. An aggressive defense is the best solution to protect your rights.
